FAQs

1. What is Sufism?

At each era, Prophets of God(Peace be upon them all) have come to bring a unique instruction to the individuals. The message is for each person to discover their true being free of all the social and outward interactions. This method and path which takes one back to their true being and the essence of life is known as Sufism. It is not imaginary, cannot be forced nor enforced. Sufism can therefore be defined as the reality of each individual and known as the core of Islam.

2. Is Sufism a new religion?

In one word, No, Sufism is not a new religion, group or sect. As it is the essence of the prophet’s (Peace be Upon them all) teachings, it has existed since the first ever human being who cognised their true being.

3. Is Sufism a sect of Islam?

Sufism is not a sect or diversion within Islam; for it is the core of Islam. As the path of Sufism takes the individual back through their heart to their source of life, it is often referred to as the spiritual dimension of Islam. The path of Sufism is for each individual to gain the knowledge of God through the inward discovery of their own being.

4. What are the practical practices of Sufi's?

Sufi’s observe all the Shari’a practices such as Prayer, Fasting, Giving Alms and Charity. Along with these practices Sufi’s also remember God at all times and demonstrate this by the practice of Zekr (Remembrance of the Beloved). To find out more about Zekr, please visit our Zekr page.

5. In Sufi literature it is often prescribed that one needs to purify themselves, what does purification mean in Sufi context?

Purification in Sufism is of great importance. The bondage that each individual has created which consists of all the attachments such as greed, desires, jealousy, anger and other cellular interactions needs to be purified if one is to experience their true essence within the unlimited realm of life. Removal of these attachments and purifying the individual from all the impurities will allow the individual to separate from the harshness of this material being and allow them to experience their spiritual existence and gain stability.
