If there were only one in the world and that one were you,

What would be your name?

Who would you be?

Would you hate?

Would you love?

If there were one, and that one had all the knowledge in the universe,

and could respond to all your needs and your wants,

What would you do?
Sufism is about this “ONE”

Sufism Lecture Series – Professor Nader Angha

The focus of Sufism is to take each person back to their true Self, which is independent and free of all worldly influences. The unique identity of each individual is that which is not restricted to the body, to desires, and all the actions and reactions that takes place day after day. It is that stable being that is unique to each and every one of us. Sufism is a discipline, a system of education that facilitates the journey of self-knowledge, a journey that enables the individual to discover his/her stable reality, and ultimately the reality of religion, as it is stated in the Holy Quran (51:6) ‘Religion is a reality’.

The capability of discovering this reality has been granted to every single individual, it is not exclusive to any particular race, creed, or culture, nor bounded to any particular place. As we read in the Holy Quran (18:110) ‘say: “I am but a man like yourselves, (but) the inspiration has come to me, that your Allah is one Allah: whoever expects to meet his lord, let him work righteousness, and, in the worship of his lord, admit no one as partner.’

Therefore, the reality of Islamic Sufism, the reality of every individual and the reality of existence or ‘God’, goes beyond the limitations and experiences of the senses and far from blind faith and the acceptance of what other people say. Sufism teaches the individual not to follow or accept anything blindly, ‘Pursue not of which you have no knowledge’ Holy Quran (17:36) but to become the master of ones own life and discover the reality for oneself. As the Holy Prophet of Islam (pbuh) has said: ‘Knowledge is not in the sky to descend unto you, not is it in the earth to grow for you. Keep to the enlightened so that it may be revealed unto you.’

Whoever cognizes the true self has cognized God.
